  2. California 1966-74, president 1981-89. A
  3. former Hollywood actor, Reagan was a hawkish
  4. and popular president. He adopted an
  5. aggressive policy in Central America,
  6. attempting to overthrow the government of
  7. Nicaragua, and invading Grenada 1983. In
  8. 1987, Irangate was investigated by the Tower
  9. Commission; Reagan admitted that USA-Iran
  10. negotiations had become an `arms for hostages
  11. deal', but denied knowledge of resultant
  12. funds being illegally sent to the Contras in
  13. Nicaragua. He increased military spending
  14. (sending the national budget deficit to
  15. record levels), cut social programmes,
  16. introduced deregulation of domestic markets,
  17. and cut taxes. His Strategic Defense
  18. Initiative, announced 1983, proved
  19. controversial owing to the cost and
  20. unfeasibility. He was succeeded by George
  21. Bush. Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois,
  22. the son of a shoe salesman who was bankrupted
  23. during the Depression. He became a Hollywood
  24. actor 1937 and appeared in 50 films,
  25. including Bedtime for Bonzo 1951 and The
  26. Killers 1964. As president of the Screen
  27. Actors' Guild 1947-52, he became a
  28. conservative, critical of the bureaucratic
  29. stifling of free enterprise, and named names
  30. before the House Un-American Activities
  31. Committee. He joined the Republican Party
  32. 1962, and his term as governor of California
  33. was marked by battles against students.
  34. Having lost the Republican presidential
  35. nomination 1968 and 1976 to Nixon and Ford
  36. respectively, Reagan won it 1980 and defeated
  37. President Carter. He was wounded in an
  38. assassination attempt 1981. The invasion of
  39. Grenada, following a coup there, generated a
  40. revival of national patriotism, and Reagan
  41. was re-elected by a landslide 1984.
